My First Drift Visit

I went to the "Drift For Charity" drift event at Bukit Jalil today. There were quite a lot of people there. When I arrived at around 3.30 p.m, there were no drift sessions yet, so I went and check out all those drift machines present. I saw Yoong's HKS Hiper DCM Nissan Silvia S13, Ah Fai's blue Goodyear Drift Team's 1JZ-GTE-powered Nissan Cefiro A31, both Sean Khoo's Onwards Motorsport Nissan Silvia S13 and Dunlop Drift Team Nissan Silvia S13 as well as a lot more other rides, including a E30 BMW 3-Series. Ah Fai and his Cefiro left soon after I arrived, as it had suffered some damage like a shattered windscreen and a broken hood. The drift session starts almost half-an-hour later with all the cars being old Toyotas like the Corolla LE and DX. There's also two of the legendary "Hachi-roku" (that's Japanese for "86", for your those who don't know), one liftback and the other a coupe. Later on cars like A31 Cefiros starts joining in. Yoong and Sean also made some runs in their cars. One thing that I learnt from this event is that no more than 2 cars should be on the track at the same time, as witnessed when 6 cars head to the track at the same time and collision almost occured when a few of them spun around. My day ended with a quick chat with both Yoong and Sean.

My Shell-James Bond Aston Martin DBS

I got the Shell-James Bond Aston Martin DBS car on the 16th November courtesy of my dad. Here are some pictures of it (sorry for the blur pictures. I took them with my lame K300i phone's VGA camera):

James Bond's Favourite Drink

As you all die-hard James Bond fans would know, Agent 007's favourite drink has got to be the Vesper vodka martini. Bond would always order it 'shaken, not stirred'. But what's the ingredients used to make that drink? Well, it's 3 measures (9 ounces) of gin (Gordon's was Bond's choice), 1 measure (3 ounces) of vodka (Bond preferred a grain vodka to be used; e.g Absolut) and half a measure (1.5 ounces) of Kina Lillet. The ingredients would then be shaken over ice until cold, served in a cocktail glass with a slice of lemon peel for garnish. Kina Lillet has not been made since 1985 and the modern substitute would be Lillet Blanc, made by the same company, Lillet, based in Podensac, France. This also creates somewhat of a chronoligical error as the film adaption of "Casino Royale" is clearly set in the present, when Kina Lillet would no longer be available.

James Bond's Rides: Aston Martin V8 Vantage

In "The Living Daylights", James Bond drives a Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Q equips the car with spike-producing tyres, jet engine booster rocket hidden behind the rear number plate for that extra speed to escape from persuers, police band scanner radio, a pair of heat-seeking missiles concealed behind the front spot lights, heads-up display (HUD) for targeting the missiles, a self-destruct system, built-in lasers on the front hubcap (the modern equivalent of the DB5's telescoping tyre-slashers but with the ability to do more than slashing tyres) and extending outriggers on the side sills to enable it to ski on snow and ice. At the beginning of the show, the car was a Volante convertible version and did not display any particular 'special features', but later it was 'winterised' with a hardtop.

James Bond's Rides: Lotus Esprit

The white Lotus Esprit S1 used by James Bond in "The Spy Who Loved Me" was a really popular with fans for it can transform from a car into a submarine. It is equipped with a cement dispenser hidden behind the rear number plate for ground use, while underwater equipments include surface-to-air missiles, depth charges, smokescreen, a periscope, torpedoes, harpoons, limpet mines and a self-destruct system that was never used in the movie. There was a flaw in the car's submarine design though: it has no reverse, so the only way to slow down is by switching off the motors. Once underwater, the retractable wheels would fold beneath extendable covers and various fins, rudders and propeller units would appear out of nowhere. There were also black reinforcing bars for protecting the windows and glasses of the car from caving in under pressure. At the end of the underwater scene, the Esprit emerges at a beach full of people, giving those beachgoers a big surprise. A similar white Esprit would later be seen in "For Your Eyes Only", albeit this time being a Turbo model and only appearing for a brief while.

James Bond's Rides: Aston Martin DB5

The Aston Martin DB5 proved to be the most fmous Bond ride ever. It first appeared in "Goldfinger", followed by "Thunderball" and "GoldenEye" as well as cameo apparances in "Tomorrow Never Dies" and "Casino Royale". In "Goldfinger", the car came equipped with revolving number plates, pop-out machine guns concealed behind the front signal lights, telescoping tyre slashers, bullet shield behind the rear windscreen, a radar screen for tracking the homing devices Bond drops into other people's cars, smokescreen, spiked nails (calthrops) for puncturing tyres of villains in pursuit and also oil slicks ejector as well as the famous ejector seat to rid of any unwanted passengers, activated via a button hidden in the gearknob. Later in "Thunderball", a rear water cannon was added. When "Goldfinger" was released in 1964, the equipments in this DB5 was considered to be way ahead of its time. For its cameos in "Tomorrow Never Dies" and "Casino Royale", the DB5 is not equipped with any of those features above.

James Bond's Rides: Aston Martin V12 Vanquish

The Aston Martin V12 Vanquish was featured in the 2002 flick "Die Another Day", the last James Bond movie to star Pierce Brosnan. The Vanquish was refined with the usual Q-Branch 'special features' refinements, such as front-firing rockets and shotguns, hood-mounted target-seeking machine guns, spike-producing tyres, radial thermal imaging system as well as ejector seats, a homage to the original DB5, but used here in a clever bit of improvisation by Agent 007 to right the car when it's been flipped onto its roof. It was also equipped with an 'adaptive camouflage' system - a cloaking device which allows it to be as good as invinsible at the touch of a button, thus earning it the 'Vanish' moniker. It also received the honour of being the most advanced James Bond car to date. In the real-world, the Vanquish is a rear-wheel-drive sports tourer machine, but as the car chase scenes for the movie is done on ice surfaces, it was converted to run on four-wheel-drive borrowed from the Ford Explorer for better traction. Also, in order to fit in the front-firing rockets and shotguns, the standard 6-litre V12 engine was replaced with a smaller Ford BOSS 302 V8 engine.

James Bond's Ride: Aston Martin DBS

The Aston Martin DBS first appeared in the 1969 James Bond flick "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", which starred George Lazenby, the only actor to play the famous Agent 007 all but once. It was the original 1969 DBS, with its only special feature being a sniper rifle found in the glovebox. Given what happened at the end of the show, it is obviously not fitted with bulletproof glass, which is supposed to be standard on all Mi6 cars. The new 2008 DBS V12 was featured twice, first in the 2006 "Casino Royale" and later in the 2008 sequel, "Quantum Of Solace" which stars Daniel Craig for both shows. Because the production DBS V12 was only launched this year, the one used in "Casino Royale" was just a fibreglass mock-up of the real car. It features secret compartments that houses Bond's Walther P99 pistol, an emergency medical kit which includes components of an emergency medical link to the Mi6 headquarters, antidotes to various poisons and a one-shot defibrillator. It wasn't known whether the DBS in "Quantum Of Solace" was equipped with any special features, but all that was known is that it has bulletproof bodywork and glass, as seen when Bond was being chased and shot by Mr. White's henchmen while driving to Siena, Italy. The body only suffered scratches and dents, not bullet holes.
